Day 7 We woke at 5:00, central time. I left camp around 5:30 a.m. It was a bit strange to wake up so early and feel the warm air. It was also unusual that the wind had not really let up during the night. I was sweating buckets at six A.M. and fighting a strong crosswind from the southeast. Then I reached Glen Ullin. I noticed the town has a large quantity of bars as I passed through. After Glen Ullin, I rode North and finally enjoyed a strong tailwind. Before long, the sun was up - another beautiful sunrise. I took some promising photos of a mailbox, sunflower fields, and some old buildings in a field, all as the sun was rising. Later on, I took snapshots of some massive coal shovels. When I reached Hazen, at around 8:45 a.m. (Mountain time) it was already 89 degrees. I wanted a shower, but the luggage van hadn't even arrived yet. Hazen did a great job of hosting CANDISC. They provided free swimming, cold water, a turkey barbecue, and a street dance. I was impressed. I toured the Knife River Indian Village today. As I leisurely walked the path along the former site of the earth lodges, trying to discern the circular depressions that marked their location, the tour bus pulled away from the parking lot. The Indian village is just north of Stanton, miles from the campground. Thankfully, I was able to get a ride with a family from South Dakota. Frank, the man of the family, was riding CANDISC and his family was driving it in a minivan. Thanks, Frank. |
